Fasting during Ramadan in Indonesia
Fasting during Ramadan in Indonesia has several unique customs that may not be found in other countries. Here are some of them:
1. Sahur On The Road: This is a tradition where people wake up in the middle of the night for suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, and then they go out on the streets to distribute food to the poor and homeless.
2. Ngabuburit: This is a way to spend time waiting for iftar by engaging in various activities such as playing music, exercising, or just hanging out with friends and family.
3. Takjil: Takjil is a snack that is usually sweet and served at iftar. It can be a dessert like kolak, dates, or fruit ice.
4. Tarawih Keliling: In some regions, Muslims move from one mosque to another to perform tarawih prayers, special night prayers during Ramadan.
5. Breaking the Fast Together: Breaking the fast together, or commonly called 'bukber', is a popular tradition in Indonesia where friends, family, or coworkers gather to break their fast together.
6. Night of Lailatul Qadar: Muslims in Indonesia spend this night praying and reading the Quran, as it is believed that this night is better than a thousand months.
7. Zakat Fitrah: At the end of Ramadan, Muslims in Indonesia usually give zakat fitrah, a form of alms given to those in need.
8. Eid al-Fitr: At the end of Ramadan, Muslims in Indonesia celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a holiday that marks the end of the fasting month. This tradition involves various activities such as halal bihalal, where people apologize to each other, and paying zakat.
Each region in Indonesia may have its own unique traditions during the month of Ramadan, reflecting the richness and diversity of this country's culture.
